Nouveau Newcomb Lamps
Back in the day when women were discouraged from messy pastimes such as making a living,
Sophie Newcomb College offered a seemly way for young ladies to earn an honest wage: decorating pottery.
Though they were not allowed to create the ware on the pottery wheel (unseemly) or fire the kiln (unseemly),
from 1895 to 1940 the women created beautiful designs in the Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts traditions.
This frog lamp echoes the graceful lines and colors created within the Newcomb enterprise.
Wired for a three-way bulb, the lamp is an homage to the women who helped light the way for the artists who follow them.
